Bridges and Partial dentures

Bridges are made of three types,

  1. Metal

  2. Ceramic / porcelain

  3. Non Precious Gold Alloy ( NPG ) and

  4. Full acrylic bridges.

When there is one or more teeth are missing, but not all, the artificial type of replacement of the missing tooth / teeth is called the partial denture. There are mainly two types of partial dentures.

  1. Removable partial dentures i.e., the patient can and has to remove it every night during sleeping and should be kept in cold water. Morning the same should be cleaned with soap and brush and worn. In this type of dentures, initially there will be lot of salivation and there will be phonation / speaking problem.

  • Fixed Partial dentures :-
It is nothing but the bridge. It is a fixed type of prosthesis which can not be removed by the patients. Only wherever there is enough supporting teeth are there to support the denture, this kind of prosthesis is advised. So for all the cases it may not be possible to do the fixed type of partial dentures. Here we’ll trim the teeth which are adjacent to the empty area. These trimmed teeth will be taken as supporting teeth . Later the bridge is fixed over these trimmed teeth with appropiate cement. i.e., bridge is nothing but two or more than crowns / caps together.

    Before Treatment After Treatment

When all the teeth are missing, the artificial denture is called the Complete Denture.
